1.  Have a compelling response to the question “What do you do?” or “Tell me about yourself”.  Make it brief and interesting.  If you have only 30 seconds, give them enough of an idea about what you do so that they seek you out to hear more later. Even in a situation where you have more time, be brief but to the point and then allow them to ask questions.  Their questions will give you an idea of their particular interest.

2.  Join or create a Holistic Chamber of Commerce. (HolisticChambersUSA.com).  Find or create a group that has members with businesses aimed at a similar target market to yours.

3. Use every social occasion you can as a networking opportunity.  Have plenty of business cards on hand and don’t be shy about offering one to someone when you meet them.  Others are expecting you to share business cards and talk about what you do, that’s why they are there also.

4. Offer to give a talk at a business meeting or teach a course at a school or training center.  Many associations and groups are looking for speakers to talk with them.  Many community colleges have adult enrichment classes and would love to have you be apart of it sharing a topic that is passionate to you and shares knowledge with the community.

5. Write an article for your local paper or community magazine.  Local papers and magazines are eager to print information about people in the area and need to fill space so readers keep reading.  If you see a local publication with a lot of ads, chances are they need content.  That’s where you can ad value to them and who knows perhaps get a free or reduced advertising for your business.

6. Form a networking partnership with others.  Take a look at BNI.com.  This is a worldwide organization with chapters set up in many cities and towns throughout the world.  Whats great about it is the structure of the clubs and that only one profession can be in the group, so you lock out your competition.

7.  Make a list of testimonials from customers to use with potential customers or use on your website.  Also, make them apart of your brochure.

8.  Model what you sell.   Create the appropriate image for your business.  Present yourself as a professional, one who is successful.  Don’t be afraid to dress nice, your image is extremely important.  That old saying is true, you don’t get a second chance for a good first impression.

9. Use a domain name that tells what your business is.

10.  Create a unique style or logo that makes you stand out and remembered.  Establish yourself or your logo as a brand so people remember you.

11. Be very grateful to those who refer business to you.  People don’t give referrals to holistic or medical professionals lightly.  A lot of that persons reputation is at risk when they refer you.  Be sure you honor that.

zen habits: Surround Yourself with Passionate People

Surround Yourself with Passionate People

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 10:09 AM PDT

Post written by Leo Babauta(a guest post)

Last night I had an amazing dinner with my wife Eva and my friends Scott and Jesse and their wives Chelsea and Joanna.

The gathering itself was simple: six people, simple healthy food, a little wine, a little tea, nothing else. Except that we lost ourselves in conversation so deeply that before we knew it, it was 1:30 a.m. and I was shocked at how quickly the time had passed.

The secret is also simple: when you talk with people who are passionate about what they’re doing, passionate about life and the people they love, it is transformative.

The people I talked with last night are incredibly passionate about what they’re doing. And yes, Brett, I mean passionate: excited, fired-up, feeling-strongly-about, thinking-about-it-all-the-time, can’t-wait-to-do-it-when-you-wake-up passion. When you talk with people who are passionate like that, you can’t help but get fired up yourself. You want to go out and do something exciting.

Passionate people not only inspire you, they give you ideas. They read books by other people who are passionate and full of ideas, and they recommend the books to you or pass the ideas on to you. Scott and Jesse, for example, are constantly meeting other passionate people, and that inspires them … and in turn that inspires me. It’s fuel for an intense fire.

A nice side benefit is Scott & Chelsea and Jesse & Joanna are some of the most health-conscious people I know — the dinner was extremely healthy and delicious, and I went away even more inspired to get fit and live a healthy life. I love people like that.

I’ve met a lot of passionate, smart, inspired people since moving to San Francisco — people like Tim Ferriss and Matt Mullenweg and Tynan and Corbett Barr and Oleg and Barron and more. It’s incredible to talk with people like that, and you can’t walk away from them without getting a bit revved up.

While I try to lead a life of minimalism, I’ve learned that minimalism can be done anywhere you go … and it doesn’t require that you move to a farm or give up your contact with people. Just the opposite: minimalism is about giving up consumption in favor of doing things you’re passionate about and having real relationships with a few people you really value. I’d much rather have a conversation with someone doing something amazing than go shopping.

You don’t have to live in a big city like New York or San Francisco to surround yourself with passionate people. They’re in small towns, but it might take a bit of looking to find them. Find small businesses who are doing amazing things, and talk with the people there. Look for startups, for artists and writers, for people who are obsessed with doing something really well.

If you can’t find them where you live, find them online. They’re everywhere if you look. Read books by people full of powerful ideas who are doing innovative things. Read their blogs, talk to them via email and Twitter. Start collaborating with people like that.

Be one of them, and inspire others.

Every year comes the new barrage of blog posts touting goal setting like it’s some sort of mystical, future telling strategy.  I bought into the belief that setting a goal was of some value, but after 20 years of doing it and seeing the majority of my goals go by the wayside, year after year, I finally figured something out.

Goals are a waste of time.
